This work was commissioned by Osprey Property Company for the River’s Edge Apartments & Studio for the Arts in Salisbury, MD.
When my young son and I moved to Salisbury from New Orleans, we crossed the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. As we crossed the iconic bridge it struck me that everything about our lives was changing and in that moment bridges became a metaphor for change and transition, connection and promise.
Casting glass is an intense and technically demanding process—My team and I take ladles that weigh in excess of 50 lbs to gather 2300 deg. glass from the furnace to pour into various molds depending on the aesthetic or formal properties I am seeking to achieve in a particular sculpture. The creative process then begins by manipulating the molten glass and adding form, imagery and color. For At the River’s Edge my team and I worked for 9 months to cast over 1500 lbs of glass to achieve the seven good pieces you see included in the final sculpture.
As an artist, I feel the process used to create a work is as important as the finished art itself. My philosophy focuses on the use of sustainable design and environmental integrity. For this work, all the elements used to create the sculpture were made from recycled materials.
